Update: Nick Saban confirmed Monday that Steve Sarkisian will indeed join the Alabama coaching staff as an offensive analyst, 11 months after Sarkisian was fired as USC's coach. As noted by Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman, Sarkisian becomes the fifth former head coach on Alabama's staff, joining Lane Kiffin, Mario Cristobal, Bobby Williams and Mike Locksley. Like Sarkisian, Locksley is an offensive analys ton the Tide's staff. He served as interim coach at Maryland in 2015. Original story Hours after Alabama destroyed Southern California 52-6 on Saturday, the Crimson Tide are reportedly meeting with the Trojans' former coach. According to the Tuscaloosa News, Steve Sarkisian is on his way to Tuscaloosa to "discuss a role" on the Tide's football staff. The exact nature of the role wasn't disclosed and nothing is official yet, per the report. This would be interesting on a couple of levels if it comes to fruition, however. For one, Sarkisian would be getting back into coaching a little less than a year after USC dismissed him for multiple reported substance-related incidents.

Don James was the head coach at Washington for 18 seasons, winning a national championship in 1991 to earn everlasting admiration among Husky fans as "The Dawgfather. " Steve Sarkisian is now in his fifth year holding that same position on Montlake, but he hopes to last at least that long, again declining interest in the vacant USC job in an interview Thursday. "USC is a good place, don't get me wrong. I had a wonderful time there, but man, we are doing something special here, " Sarkisian, a former Trojan assistant under Pete Carroll, told " The Dan Patrick Show. " "It's been taking up four-and-a-half years to build this thing the right way. "I love my job. I hope I get to coach here longer than Don James did. I hope I win more national championships than Don James did. That's the goal, but things happen in this world in my favor, not in my favor. That's the reality of life. " If Sarkisian is to last as long as James, at some point he will have to beat Pacific Northwest rival Oregon, preferably this Saturday.

Not everyone can handle being relegated to such a role. In 2012, offensive coordinator Kennedy Polamalu grew restless without playcalling duties and got into a heated argument with Kiffin a few nights before the Sun Bowl. Polamalu was fired about a month later. Helton's role was not much different under Sarkisian last season. It could be a thankless task. After Helton merely said kicker Andre Heidari could make a field goal before a fourth down during one game, Sarkisian sent the kicker into the contest. Heidari missed the field goal and Sarkisian snapped, "Don't ever tell me to kick a field goal again! " To Sarkisian's credit, he relinquished playcalling duties to Helton before this season to try to better supervise the team. Whether or not Helton called plays, though, he was always supportive. "As an assistant coach, it's not your place to be in the limelight, " Helton said. "It's about helping the coach be successful. " Helton knew when he was appointed in September that being a no-drama successor to Sarkisian enhanced his chances of winning the job full time.

An ESPN report said Sarkisian " showed up lit to meetings " and an August 2015 video from a donor event showed Sarkisian dropping the F-bomb while apparently under the influence of alcohol. Sarkisian was initially placed on an indefinite leave of absence before being terminated days later. Secondly, Sarkisian would be reuniting with Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin. The two worked together under Pete Carroll as Trojan assistants from 2005-06. Sarkisian succeeded Kiffin as USC's head coach after the 2013 season. Sarkisian went 12-6 in his short stint with USC. Again, should Sarkisian join Alabama's staff -- there has been no official word from his camp one way or the other -- the Tide would have two fired USC coaches on staff days after they handed the Trojans their worst season-opening loss in history. As if Alabama couldn't possibly troll USC any harder.

Nope, nope, nope, and nope. Those were the names most often mentioned as candidates to be the next coach at Southern California—but none of them is. Trojans athletic director Pat Haden hired Steve Sarkisian away from Washington Monday and many USC fans are feeling as if they've been given a consolation prize. Not quite the home-run hire they were expecting. And Huskies fans didn't seem too broken up by Sark's departure. Maybe it's because Sarkisian in many ways is so similar to the coach Haden fired in September, five games into this season. Sarkisian and Lane Kiffin rapidly climbed the coaching ladder together as assistants under Pete Carroll during USC's not-so-distant glory days. They were offensive whiz kids and buddies who both became head coaches by the time they reached their mid-30s. As good as the Carroll days were at USC, it's fair to wonder if the Trojans need to move on.

USC to Steve Sarkisian You DENIED Having a Booze Problem 1/7/2016 2:20 PM PT EXCLUSIVE USC is blasting fired football coach Steve Sarkisian in new legal docs... saying he lied to the school about his battles with the the bottle. USC just filed a response to Sarkisian's $30 million lawsuit -- and in the papers the school claims he fed the public a bunch of lies when he claimed his employers were aware of his alcohol issues. Now SC is saying he NEVER admitted he had a drinking problem, or that he was an alcoholic. Furthermore, the university says... "The truth is he denied ever having a drinking problem, but blamed his inability to perform the essential functions of his job on marital stress, lack of sleep, and anxiety. " In the docs, obtained by TMZ Sports, the school says Sark told them he was taking meds for his anxiety. SC's legal response echoes a statement it issued back in December. This just puts them on the record with the court. We broke the story, Sarkisian said in his lawsuit that Haden KNEW there was an alcohol problem because he made Sark sign a letter promising to get counseling, and avoid future embarrassing situations involving booze.

• Washington breaks out trick play against USC for a touchdown Haden's ill-fated decision making was on full display Thursday night. And while this loss doesn't mark the end of Sarkisian's time at USC, it marks a definitive point where people can start speculating about the end. And that will certainly include Eagles coach Chip Kelly. USC had strong interest in Kelly when it hired Sarkisian. Not even halfway through his second season, there's worry if "Seven-Win Sark" will even get there. Things can get a lot worse for USC (3–2) with upcoming games at Notre Dame, home against Utah and then at California. The barbarians haven't circled the gate, but they're huddling and game-planning. When asked if he's coaching for his job the rest of the way this season, Sarkisian said defiantly, "Not at all. " Is Utah on upset alert vs. Cal? Could Michigan make playoff? #DearAndy When considering Sarkisian versus Petersen, USC picked hoodies over khakis, sideline volatility over serenity and a coach who has proven he can win on signing day as opposed to league play.
